Fish

Here is my mother, Miriam, with her three girls...

I love fish.  I eat it all the time, but I don’t cook it too often.

Since we keep Kosher, and we live in a big, vibrant city with wonderful restaurants, I generally end up eating fish when we go out.  If we go out for dinner twice a week, odds are I will be eating fish twice that week.  Coupled with that is the fact that not every member of my family loves eating fish the way Yossi and I do.  Therefore, I serve it at home only sometimes.

In honor of my parents who delighted in telling us tales of their mothers and the gefilte fish they made (complete with stories of the carp swimming in their bathtubs, waiting to be used in the forthcoming mix of ground fish), this chapter is dedicated to my hardworking, patient and loving mother and grandmothers – and the gefilte fish they toiled over and the children that they raised.
